The Process

The Hair Transplant Procedure – Step by Step

Our hair transplant procedure is carefully planned and executed by a skilled medical team to ensure the best results.
Here’s what to expect on the day of your surgery:

  • Pre-Surgery Preparation: On the morning of your procedure, our medical team will welcome you to the clinic and get you prepared for surgery.
There’s no need for you to shave your head completely beforehand – if any trimming is required, we will take care of it at the clinic.

Your scalp will be cleaned and prepped, and the surgeon will review the transplant plan with you again. You’ll meet with your doctor and guide, who will explain everything that will happen.
We make sure you’re comfortable and all your questions are answered before proceeding. (If you’re feeling nervous, that’s normal – we’ll do our best to put you at ease.)

  • Donor Area Hair Extraction: The procedure begins with harvesting hair follicles from the donor area.
Typically, this is the back or sides of your scalp where hair is densest.
The surgeon uses a specialized micro-punch tool to gently extract follicles one by one – this is the core of the FUE technique.
Each extracted graft contains one or a few hairs.

Our team examines each follicle under magnification and selects only the healthiest, strongest grafts for transplantation.
The extraction process is meticulous, by taking grafts in a randomized pattern, we maintain an even appearance in the donor area with minimal noticeable thinning.
Throughout this step, you will be resting comfortably under local anesthesia and won’t feel pain.

  • Follicle Sorting and Counting: After extraction, the surgical technicians will sort and count the follicles.
This involves separating grafts by the number of hairs they contain and preparing them for implantation.
We often obtain grafts that contain 1, 2, or 3 hairs each.
The total number of grafts extracted will be carefully counted and documented (for example, 2,500 grafts).

This number will correspond to how many will be implanted.
By organizing the grafts, we can strategically plan their placement (for instance, single-hair grafts for the hairline, and multi-hair grafts for adding density behind the hairline).
Proper sorting is a crucial quality control step that helps ensure you get a great outcome.

  • Site Creation & Graft Placement Preparation: Next, the surgeon prepares the recipient area (the balding or thinning areas where hair will be added).
Tiny incisions or channels are created in the scalp where each new hair will go.
This step is like an artist sketching the canvas for where each graft will be planted.

The incision creation determines the direction, angle, and density of your new hair, so it’s done very carefully following the hairline design we agreed upon. Meanwhile, the extracted follicles are kept in a specialized solution to keep them healthy.

The team may also begin loading the grafts into implantation devices (implant pens or needles) so they are ready for the surgeon to insert. All of this preparation is done methodically to ensure each graft is handled gently and placed optimally.

  • Implanting the Grafts: Now the transplantation phase begins.
The surgeon (often assisted by a technician) takes each prepared follicular graft and implants it into the pre-made incisions in your recipient area.
This is a painstaking process – graft by graft, your new hairs are placed according to the aesthetic plan.

The team pays close attention to positioning each follicle at the correct angle and depth so that, when the hair grows, it will mimic natural growth and lie in harmony with your existing hair.
We typically start with the frontal hairline and work back toward the crown (if the crown is being done), ensuring an even distribution.
This step can take several hours as hundreds or thousands of grafts are carefully set in place.

You will remain lying down comfortably; many patients watch TV or nap during this part.
By the end of the implantation, the balding area will be filled with all the new grafts – these are your new hairs starting their growth journey.

  • Post-Surgery Completion & Care: Once all grafts are implanted, the doctor will do a thorough final check.
We ensure that all planned grafts have been placed correctly and that both the recipient area and donor area look clean and problem-free.
The transplanted area will be washed and cleaned gently.

You might have a bandage applied to the donor area, the medical team will review the post-op instructions with you in detail.
You’ll learn how to care for your scalp in the coming days – for example, how to do gentle washing, apply any prescribed solutions, and what to avoid (like scratching or heavy exercise).

We will provide any necessary medications, such as antibiotics (to prevent infection) and pain relievers (though many patients experience only mild discomfort).
After everything is verified and all your questions are answered, you’ll be free to go back to your hotel to rest.
The surgery day is complete, and now the healing begins.

Following the procedure, we remain available 24/7 in case you need anything or have concerns.
Typically, you’ll visit the clinic the next day for a brief check-up and a hair wash, after a few days of rest, you’ll likely be ready to travel back home.

Remember that the transplanted hairs will shed in a few weeks (this is normal) and then start to regrow in a few months.
We will stay in touch with you to monitor your progress and answer any questions during the recovery period. Our goal is to ensure you are comfortable and well-informed from start to finish.

In summary, you don’t have to worry about anything on procedure day – our doctors and staff will take care of you every step of the way.
From preparation to the final check, we prioritize your safety, comfort, and the quality of the transplant.

By understanding each step of the process, we hope you feel more confident and relaxed as you plan for your hair transplant in Colombia.
